This week, it’s time for the annual reader survey.
Please click here and give the people (me) what they want (feedback). And it’s not all about me — there is a fun question in there about your favorite cultural thing from last year too. I’ll share that list next week and some highlights from the survey - ASSUMING YOU FILL IT OUT, WHICH I AM SURE YOU WILL. It’s anonymous! You can tell me how you reallllly feel (you can also add your name to any of the replies if you want me to know it is you)

I am so chill about this
This week in an Editor's Note. . .
Happy New Year, I guess? A reminder for new readers (and old), I have been writing this newsletter for nearly a decade mostly as an escape from the relentless news cycle. While I occasionally touch on heavier topics, I am never going to turn this into a place for analysis or discourse about the current state of world affairs, there are much smarter and more well-informed places for you to turn to for that sort of thing. This is meant to add lightness, a break-in-case-of-emergency-dose of levity.
And remember, mutual aid is a great place to start when you are feeling helpless.
This week in reading. . .
My first read of the year was Thirst Trap and it was a solid one. A group of women in Ireland on the cusp of 30 navigating the death of their friend and all the truly terrible choices they make. It was a nice contrast to Maame, which I listened to, which was about a 20-something Ghanian woman with one of the most delightful, stressful, neurotic internal monologues. I laughed out loud on more than one occasion, I got weepy on another.
This week in Good Hang with Amy Poehler. . .
Amy had on Gwyneth and the way she LIT up when Gwyneth mentioned enneagrams made me cackle. Also Gwyneth was so coy about “dating one of the writers” when Good Will Hunting came up. Girl, what are you playing at? (It was genuinely funny)
This week in TV. . .
The Pitt is back! I can’t wait to be equal parts stressed out and soothed by Noah Wyle.
Speaking of which, my endless ER rewatch continues (shout out to my sister in arms, Erin) and Hulu has added an expiry date and honestly nothing could be ruder.
This week in a gif. . .

This week in movies. . .
My time off was filled with movies. I really wanted to go to the theater, but there was nothing out that compelled me to do more than stream. Eternity was an interesting conceit and I mostly liked it. I loathed One Battle After Another. So long and stupid. Mickey 17 was not my favorite of Bong Joon Ho’s movies. Tessa Thompson was extra GORGEOUS in Hedda, my goodness.
This week in a newsletter. . .
Basically everything Samantha Irby wrote about Heated Rivalry is in my heart.
Anne Helen Petersen with an interview with Sarah Mosseri on trust in the work place.

This week in one good thing. . .
I had such a great time being off of work (fully off - no emails or slacks) that reentry has been incredibly challenging for me, so I will say three people have talked to me in the last week about books I recommended that they love/loved and I will take it.
This week in a quote. . .
“You need to accept impermanence without giving up on continuity. Some people will be central for a season and peripheral later. Some will leave and return in different forms. Not every bond must last forever to have been real. We should all remember that to nurture a friendship is to allow the other person to become unfamiliar and to approach them again with curiosity rather than grievance.” - Alena Falkengren
