This week, I’m thinking about art. I took some days off and set out to hit some must-see exhibits. I was recently talking about how challenging I think it is to write about art, so I won’t subject you to too much art writing.

First and foremost, I wanted to spend time with The Clock, the absolute genius Christian Marclay installation at MoMA. I was obsessed with it the last time it was shown in NYC, nearly 12 years ago. It is brilliant. Read about it properly here. I could only stay for an hour and change, but I stayed from 10:40 am to 12:05 pm and staying for noon was the best decision. I wish I could’ve committed an entire day to it, but it’s up until mid-February, so I’ll be back.

no photos allowed, alas.

I returned to MoMA another day to see the Life Dances On: Robert Frank in Dialogue and in addition to a tremendous amount of work I’d never seen before, there was also so much documentary video footage.

I went to the Met to see the Artists Working at the Met. It was up for only a few short weeks, but it was brimming with art of every medium. I wish it had been curated or organized a bit more, but I assume the sheer volume made that impossible.

Also at the Met, the do-not-miss Flight into Egypt: Black Artists and Ancient Egypt, 1876–Now. Absolute fiiiiiire.

I also walked around and took pictures of things like hands and funny animals faces because. . .well, why not?

Genius friend Jackie directed me to Jesse Krimes: Corrections and I am so so happy that she did. The artist was incarcerated for six years and the work was made during that time. Below is a collection of 10,000 pebbles from prison yards sent to Krimes by incarcerated individuals. I couldn’t seem to get a proper shot of the whole wall, but you can see it here.

At The Whitney, I swoooooned over the immersive Edges of Ailey. I circled around not once, not twice, but three times. I fell in love with so much of it and the juxtapositions of various works had me walking around with heart eyes.

this wall of pieces?!?! knocked me out.

But have no fear, I haven’t gone too high brow. Another highlight from the last few days? I went out of my way to get two delicious sandwiches. I had a 50/50 at the counter at S&P with a chocolate egg cream, obviously. And I took my aunt to Court Street Grocers - her first time! - and got a perfect ham & cheese. Honestly? Both of those sandwiches were art too.

This week in reading. . .
Just fully crawling out of my skin (complimentary) reading Colored Television. Danzy Senna is WILD. I read the fun-premise-meh-execution, The Deja Glitch. I really do love a time loop story. Finally out of library waiting list purgatory for The Rachel Incident which I thought was excellent. Racing to the finish line to see if I can accomplish my reading goal for the year. Fingers crossed!

New Kendrick on repeat. (LOL, such a herb)

As the kids say (used to say), screaming, crying, throwing up - Scully/Mulder aka Gillian and David were so unbelievably important to my life. I need a full 10 part series of them talking to each other.

Sure why not listen to Tracee Ellis Ross talk about some fancy stuff she’s bought?
